Road Wear Privacy Policy
Last Updated: September 6, 2026
At Road Wear, your privacy is paramount. This Privacy Policy provides a transparent, detailed disclosure of how data is treated within the Road Wear mobile application ("the Application").
1. Core Principle of Local Privacy (Privacy by Design)
Road Wear operates strictly under the principles of Privacy by Design and Data Minimization.
- No Account Registration: We do not require account creation, emails, phone numbers, passwords, or personal credentials.
- 100% On-Device Processing: All telemetry and usage data generated by the Application—including your GPS trip history, recorded vehicles, maintenance logs, speed records, and preferences—is stored strictly on your device's internal storage using protected Android databases (
Room Database and Preferences DataStore).
- No Central Ingestion Servers: We do not operate or own central servers to harvest, collect, or analyze your routes or personal behavior.
2. Location Permissions & Foreground Service
To deliver real-time speedometer, odometer, and route logging features, the Application requests Android location permissions (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION and ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION).
Use of Precise Location
- Local Route Generation: Latitude, longitude, altitude, and instantaneous speed metrics captured during journeys are used exclusively to plot routes on the local map and calculate trip statistics (distance traveled, maximum speed, and average speed).
- Local Reverse Geocoding: Android system libraries are used on-device to determine orientational start and end municipality names for your logged trips.
- Foreground Service: When tracking an active trip, the Application executes an Android Foreground Service (
FOREGROUND_SERVICE_TYPE_LOCATION) accompanied by an ongoing interactive notification. This ensures continuous, reliable GPS tracking when the display is switched off or while using other apps.
- Strict GPS Privacy: Your GPS coordinates and trip routes are NEVER uploaded to external servers, never shared with third parties, and never sold.
3. Third-Party Services & Integrated SDKs
To enable essential functionality (maps, weather, monetization, and diagnostic stability), the Application integrates reputable third-party libraries that may collect anonymous technical data governed by their respective privacy terms:
1. OSMDroid & OpenStreetMap (Mapping Engine):
- Renders and caches map tiles. The Application sends direct HTTP requests to open tile servers using the technical device User-Agent header required by map servers.
2. Open-Meteo API (Weather Forecasts):
- During active journeys, the Application periodically queries Open-Meteo's public API with approximate route coordinates to display ambient temperature. No user or device identifiers are transmitted.
3. Google Play Billing (Pro Upgrades):
- Manages Pro license transactions. All payment processing and transaction verification is handled securely by the Google Play Store. The Application only receives a signed verification token confirming license activation.
4. Google AdMob (Advertising):
- The free version displays non-intrusive ads via Google AdMob. AdMob may utilize pseudonymous device identifiers (such as the Google Advertising ID) in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy.
5. Firebase Crashlytics & Analytics (Diagnostics):
- Captures anonymous crash diagnostics (device model, Android OS version, exception stack trace) to ensure application stability. These reports contain zero personal data and zero GPS coordinates.
4. Local Storage and Data Deletion
Because all data resides strictly on your physical device:
- Complete Ownership: You hold full, uncompromised control over your data.
- How to Erase Data: You can permanently wipe all records at any time:
- Within the App: Delete individual trips or vehicles directly from their respective screens.
- From Android Settings: Navigate to Settings > Apps > Road Wear > Storage > Clear Storage.
- Uninstalling the Application: Uninstalling the Application triggers Android to automatically and permanently purge the app's entire local database and preferences.
5. Compliance with Global Privacy Frameworks (GDPR / CCPA)
Given our strict on-device data architecture:
- Right of Access: You can inspect all data immediately by opening the Application.
- Right to Portability: You can export recorded routes or launch them in compatible external navigation apps.
- Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten"): Exercised immediately by clearing data in settings or uninstalling the app.
6. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect feature changes or regulatory adjustments. Any revisions will be published on this page with an updated timestamp.
